When you place keywords in your post is like adding salt to your food. Too little it gives no flavor, too much it makes you sick Share on X

PAGE TITLE

As you could imagine, the title is the most important location to place keywords. And if you can place the keyword at the beginning of the title, it’s even better. Google pays a lot of attention to the title, so be sure that you are using Heading 1 (H1 tags in HTML) to confirm that sentence as the title of the post.

Sometimes Google may show your title at the results with different text than the one you wrote. That’s usually because you decided to use a title too long. As our friends from Yoast SEO say, try to use a title with less than 600px (something like 60-66 characters).

SLUG

The Slug is that phrase that appears right beneath the name of your website in a search engine, such as Google. For example, I’m going to show you how one blog post from Freenancial Exposed looks like:

Example: Title – Slug – Permalink with “passive income” keyword

Some experts say that the Slug does not have a big influence on how Google is positioning your content. But I think that for the human who is looking at the results it’s very important to see that the keyword is still there. And if it is important for the human, it should be for Google now or in the future. So you should be sure to place keywords there as well.

In words of Wikipedia, the permalink is literally a permanent link. In other words, in our case, is the website address you’ll write or share with your friends so they can access and read the blog. For instance, this is the permalink of our site of resources, if you want to check which one would be useful for you: https://freenancialexposed.com/resources/

When you decide how to choose the words in the permalink it’s very important that you consider two things:

  • You have to place your keywords there.
  • Don’t use a permalink too long. The magic number is four. Use four words to define it.

BODY

Now, let’s talk about the main part of the post in terms of content. I already told you about it in this article:  The best blog post template (after making a lot of mistakes).

When I write,  I like to divide the Body into important sections with different purposes for the reader. Let’s see the use of the keywords in each section.

INTRODUCTION

At the beginning of the body, I usually write an introduction. The introduction is really important and it’s a perfect location to place keywords.

You can check very useful resources at the end of this article. One of them will help you write great introductions.

NOTE: As always, you have to focus on the content and not only on the keywords. A few years ago Google was dumber and it was a question of how many keywords he could find. Now it’s the opposite. Google is smarter and tries to “read” the text as a human would read it. So don’t try to place the keywords in every single place you find. Google could consider that spam, and forget about your post forever.

HEADERS

You should use headers (usually the H2 tag) to organize your content. You should probably use sub-headers too (H3, H4, H5, H6 tags) to add even more order and structure. If it doesn’t look forced or weird you can use the keyword in any of them.  Please, not in all of them. It would look just like if a robot would have written the article. So awful.

TEXT WITH FORMAT

It’s recommended to use bold format and bullets to help the reader get the message in a clean and easy way. Google likes that and if you place keywords in one or two (not all) of those places, it could give you some extra points.

EXTERNAL LINKS

The external links are those links you use for a content that’s not part of your own site. Google likes when you do that.  If you place your keywords in the anchor text (the link text) it’s going to be good for your SEO.  This is what the great Backlinko says about placing keywords in the anchor text

PRO TIP: BACKLINKS.

Backlinks are the opposite to external links. Those are the links that come into your website. Probably you won’t know the owner or editor of the article that mentions your content, but you could try to reach them. If you finally contact them, ask them to change the anchor text in order to place your keywords in it (or at least you Web or Company Name). Google ranks your site better with backlinks that place keywords or company name in the anchor text.

IMAGES

Images are a good option to place keywords. And how is that? Because there are some blank spaces to be filled.  You can learn this better with an example. Look at the image below. For that image, the keyword was “Hostgator review” (you can find the article here: Hostgator Review (2019). Why we chose them instead of Bluehost.).

Example place keywords in image - freenancial exposed

As you can see, I place keywords in almost any empty spaces. But don’t forget this advice:  You should always make it sound natural. So don’t repeat a lot of times the keyword with no more info.

For example, the Alt text: This tag is used to give information to disabled people. So help them with a title or a sentence to know where they are and what the image is about.

You can also include your keywords in the File name and in the Description box.
