THE PROCESS STEP BY STEP
To make it easier for you, we’ve divided the whole process of creating a great blog post in the following steps:
1. FIND THE MOST SUITABLE KEYWORDS.
Let’s say you already have a very good idea and you’re going to write a great blog post. Do you think that the words you choose for the title, the “permalink” or the “slug” are important? Of course, the answer is a big YES. These are the “keywords”. And you need to choose them wisely.
Perhaps right now you are asking yourself: But what the hell is a “permalink” or a “slug”? If so, in this article you are going to learn it: Place keywords on your blog post as Mr. Google likes it.
Coming back to the keywords, yes, it does matter a lot what kind of words you use in the different places that you have in the article. You must know that the keywords are precisely the ones you send to the internet to try to compete for getting views.
Now I’m going to show you the headlines of how I do keyword research. But If you want to know how to do keyword research in deep, you just have to check this article: How to do keyword research for your blog EASILY. There you have all you may need in detail. Clear. Even if you are not an expert.
When you write, the keywords you spread on the internet are trying to compete for something simple, the attention of the audience -Luis M. Gil Share on XA) FIRST, USE GOOGLE TRENDS TO CHECK IF THAT SUBJECT IS TRENDING.
The first thing we do when we come up with an idea is to pick the main word from the idea. Then, we check that word in Google Trends.
With that fantastic Google tool, I can see if that word (that subject) has really been “trendy” in searches in a certain period of time and a certain location. I usually search for a one year period and the U.S. location.
B) FIND THE APPROPRIATE LONG TAIL KEYWORD.
Sometimes a single word is has a lot of competence on the internet. So it is wiser to use “long tail keywords” (a two, three or four words keyword). At this point we’re going to Jaaxy, a fantastic tool you can use for free to find the best keywords. [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation when you make a purchase through this link along the post. Thanks]. To know more about the “long tail keywords” you could check the same article a told you before: How to do keyword research for your blog EASILY
With Jaaxy you look for the best keywords to use based on these criteria:
- A reasonable number of searches each month.
- A low competition. ( less than 100 is great).
- Of course, readable and friendly, We’re writing for people, no for machines.
You can see below an example using Jaaxy from the article about keyword research (The initial word here was “job”):
C) CHECK EVERYTHING IN THE KEYWORD PLANNER OF GOOGLE ADWORDS:
After that, we should go to Google to verify that everything is coherent. Google is the real king and it’s important to check that the results you expect meet Google’s expectations too. So I’m going to the Google Keyword Planner (a tool from Google Ads). If the numbers are aligned with the ones from Jaaxy, I continue. If not, I come back to see if there was a mistake finding the period, the location, etc.
PRO TIP: Right in the moment you’re verifying the keyword in the keyword planner, you can take some time to see at the “keyword recommendations”. I do that because I could find another interesting keyword that people search a lot on Google. Sometimes I’ve got a free nice idea to write a future post about it.
2. FOCUS ON YOUR READERS WHEN YOU WRITE, NOT ON GOOGLE.
Even though it may sound weird after point 1, you must be focused on creating content for real humans, not machines.
Is it important you gain positions in the search engines? Yes. But what’s more important is that when someone clicks that suggestion they’d love what they’re reading.
Write great content in your blog post without thinking about keywords or positioning. This is the time where you free your writing skills and take everything out.
Just one technical point: Humans read post and web pages in a particular way. In fact, they scanning more than reading. It’s what is called the F-Shaped pattern. If you want to deliver your content in a way that meets this pattern, you should read this article: How the F-Shaped Pattern can make your blog fail
3. BE CAREFUL WITH ORTHOGRAPHY AND EXPRESSIONS.
Probably I shouldn’t say this. But please, always pay attention to this! And yes, it is possible you’re very anxious to post your article, but you should always review orthography and grammar.
And if you’re like me, that my mother tongue is Spanish and not English, you have to dedicate yourself a bit more into this. But there’s help out there for you and me. I use online tools that help me, such as Grammarly and Ginger. Without them, my life as a writer in another language would be much more difficult. [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation when you make a purchase through any of those links. Thanks]
However, I’m very optimistic and I always believe that people put content and effort above all. I like to think that I’m helping people to access to subjects that are not easy, in an organized and simple way. So Yes, I could make English mistakes sometimes, but I always hope there will be a little bit of compassion for this poor man from Spain and his mistakes. I promise to keep improving 🙂
4. FORMAT IT AND CONFIRM THAT IS “SEO FRIENDLY”.
A) THE KEYWORDS:
Once everything is ready and reviewed is when you can verify if you’ve used the keyword throughout the text.
If you didn’t naturally do it, maybe it wasn’t the most appropriate keyword election, or maybe the way you choose to deliver the message didn’t fit. Now you can change any sentence without taking away its attraction, but including the adequate keyword.
Where should I include the keywords?
In this article you have that question answered in detail: Place keywords on your blog post as Mr. Google likes it. But here you have all the places with some tips and comments:
- Title. Start it with the keyword if you can.
- Slug. Insert it here just in case Google or your reader can become “hooked”.
- Permalink. Sure. This one is on Google’s behalf !!
- Introduction. The moment you have to deliver your best. Sure you should include it here.
- Headers. Some of them, not all of them.
- Bold and other formatted text. It could help
- External and Internal Links. Include the keyword in the “anchor text”, but not only the keyword. Too obvious to Google.
- Images and graphics. Use the attachment details, alt text, description, file name. I can make a big difference.
B) THE HEADINGS, BOLD, QUOTES:
The use of headings, italic, lists, quotes is very important not only to place keywords for Google. Like I said before, you must understand that nowadays the reader doesn’t read, he just “scans” the article. If you organize the information, you’ll help him spotting what’s relevant.
PRO TIP FOR SEO: If you still don’t have it, you should install Yoast Seo as a plug-in for your WordPress site. It’s incredibly helpful because it shows you the things you can improve in your post to make it SEO Friendly. It has a very good free version, but if you’d like to have a bonus discount in their great Premium Version, just contact me and I’ll give you a special bonus code for that. (With no revenue to me, just for helping you)
5. ACCOMPANY YOUR TEXT WITH IMAGES (OR VIDEOS).
We’re extremely visual animals. We scan a blog post instead of reading it. These are two important reasons to use images and videos in your content. But no so fast! You have to be careful when you don’t have the copyright of the image you’d like to use. Never use an image or another content if you don’t have rights to. If you are in doubt, at least remember to always mention the author and the place from where you took it.
If you want to avoid unpleasant situations you can search for royalty free images or you can pay for high-quality images.
When I want to purchase high-quality images to avoid those problems with copyright, these are my preferred sources: [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation when you make a purchase through any of those two links. Thanks]
6. PERIODICALLY CHECK YOUR BLOG POST.
We’re almost at the end. But before you finish here and start doing all the steps to create your own great blog post, remember one last thing: A post, most of the times, is a “living” being.
What am I trying to say with this? Well, it is possible that this post that I’m now writing should be checked every now and then. In the future I could discover new strategies, maybe I’ve found better tools. Even with your contributions in the comments section, I may be able to improve the content. (Yes, this is an indirect petition for your collaboration, as you see, everything is “exposed” even my hints!)
For those reasons, it has a lot of sense to review and update your blog post. Even to give it a new life and reactivate it when it could be a little “old-fashion” as time goes by. Do not underestimate the power of a “lifting” to your content. Your followers and Google will thank you.
7. CONCLUSIONS AND MUCH MORE USEFUL CONTENT.
It’s really important to pay attention to your blog post. To stand out among the millions of articles that are on the internet is not easy. To delight the readers, every day more demanding and with less time is not either. It could be really useful to have a template so you don’t forget anything key about the design. It’s a lot of knowledge and a lot of information you have to search for and organize. Well, it would be like that but I already did that work for you.
